It is almost impossible to talk about use of a mobile phone without considering the Short Messaging Service, whether in Kenya or any other part of the world. The SMS recently marked 20 years of use, since the first SMS was sent over the Vodafone GSM network in the United Kingdom in December 1992. Since then, SMS has become the most widely used data application in the world, with 3.6 billion active users, or 78 per cent of all mobile phone subscribers.
